Wat rest ons nog in tijden van chaos en dreiging? Afleiding, entertainment, troost? Of zijn het juist deze vormen van vermaak die ons verder doen wegkijken? In de productie Hollywood Songbook gaan de indringende liederen uit Hanns Eislers gelijknamige liedcyclus de confrontatie aan met cabaretliederen uit de periode tussen de twee wereldoorlogen. Het Lied 'This only thing which consoles us', naar Blaise Pascal, vormt de thematische kern: vermaak als balsem én vergif. Het sust, troost en leidt af maar tegelijk leidt het ons naar de
ondergang.
Met wrange humor, subtiele satire en snijdende schoonheid onderzoekt dit geënsceneerde concert de rol van kunst en entertainment in tijden van morele crisis. Liederen die wiegen én bijten...
